The Man Behind The Maps: Legendary Ski Artist James Niehues

Many skiers come up to me and we get to talking
and it comes out that I’m the trail map artist and they’ll say,
‘Oh my gosh. I thought, I thought that was done by computers,’
and I say, ‘No, I paint every one of those trees.’ You know, I paint a hand-painted map
and in today’s world the computer has come along
and many people have this mindset that the best map would be produced by a computer. I can get to the top of the mountain. I can look around. I can feel it. And that’s what’s important, you know? The magnitude of what I’ve done is, whenever
I think about it, maybe a little staggering. I’ve painted maps for 200 ski resorts and
as you flip through this book, you’ll see all these different areas, all
these different countries that I’ve been privileged to visit. I’m just so excited that this can all be
combined into one book, all my work. And it’s been a dream of mine for many,
many years.

  1. It's amazing the things you don't realize. Sounds like an awesome job! I always wondered how all the ski maps had a similar style.
