Governor's School for the Arts (GSA) Opens on Campus

GSA is Kentucky's flagship initiative for Kentucky's brightest young artists we audition and review thousands of students from all across the state who are passionate about their art form and from that we're able to take about two hundred and fifty-six students to accept into the summer program the summer program is a through three-week tuition free residential summer program and when the students are there it's a pretty rigorous intense program they're basically in some sort of class or performance from 9:00 a.m. sometimes until 10:00 p.m. every day we go for 7 days a week for those whole three weeks and in addition to really rigorous study of their art form they're learning about how they can use their creative abilities to empower themselves as artists as creative citizens and how they can make an impact in the world specifically an impact that they can make because of their role as an artist when I was a student at GSA it was really the first time that I was ever in an environment where when I woke up I was considered an artist first and that was such a profound experience for me my artistic identity was something that I was always so passionate about when I look at today's GSA students and their experience at the program it's amazing to me the through line I see from my experience to their experience of this program there's so many similar discoveries lessons that are learned by the GSA students regardless of what year what generation they're in and that's not just with me when I talk to a GSA alum from 1987 they will tell me very very slimmer things about the benefits and the experiences of the program that a student from last year will tell me a being director of GSA especially a program that has given me so much is just such a gift and I feel such an honor and I also feel it increases the responsibility I have to ensure that these students are getting the same opportunity that I did if not even more and then to take GSA to my alma mater the University of Kentucky is an amazing full circle experience UK's commitment to the arts is such a high level and so profound it makes it the perfect home for a program like GSA the way that UK's commitment to the arts is represented through its facilities the resources it has on campus the faculty and the experts that it has on campus just GSA has so many opportunities to connect those and really take our program to a new level
